  • Ubuntu is one of the more popular distributions of linux. The word ubuntu comes from an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. It also means 'I am what I am because of who we all are'.

  • A red panda is an animal native to the himalayas and southwestern china. The english word for red panda is “Firefox” which is where the browser gets its name from, but the logo is actually a fox.!

  • The very first apple logo featured sir isaac Newton sitting underneath a tree, with an apple about to hit his head.

  • The first white house website was launched during the clinton-Gore administration on october 21, 1994. coincidentally, the site was linked to a pornography web site.
  • The world’s first computer which was named the Z1, was invented by Konrad zuse in 1936. His next invention , the Z2 was finished in 1939 and was the first fully functioning electro-mechanical computer.
  • over 6,000 new computer viruses are released every month.
  • In 1971, the first speech recognition software named, “Hearsay” was developed in India.
  • The QWERTY keyboard layout is 129 years old.
  • David Bradley(engineer not the actor) wrote the code for [ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete] key.
  • The 30th of November is known as “Computer security Day.”
  • The ipod took 3 years to reach a market audience of 50 million, while radio took 38 years and television took 13 years.
  • The code name for the 12 engineers who designed the IBM pc was “The dirty dozen.”
  • Tim Berners-Lee invented “World Wide Web” in 1989.

  • Grace Hopper did not discover the first bug. The term had been in use for decades for all kinds of engineering issues.
  • The first hard drives were built in the 1950s.
  • Lots of computers have been built using hydraulics. Here’s another example: MONIAC - Wikipedia. These computers are called analog computers, as opposed to digital computers, which are the kind we use every day.
  • There’s no general agreement on what was the first programmable digital computer; candidates include the Zuse Z-1, the Bletchley Park Colossus, ENIAC… everything was put together in von Neumann’s IAS machine (that was its exciting name), but the amount of innovation in that computer is up for debate. Certainly, the work that followed came from that machine.
  • The funding for that machine (the IAS computer) was based principally on its ability to perform the necessary computations to prove the “superbomb”, AKA thermonuclear or hydrogen bomb, was possible, and then to complete the design. We would probably not have modern computers, or we would be much further behind, were it not for that problem. Yay, thermonuclear weapons?
  • The White House website never connected to a porn website, but for many years, if you follow whitehouse with .com, rather than .gov, you got to a porn site. Not sure if that’s still the case. Obviously, in the early days of web browsing when people didn’t know much about URLs, people typed this in by mistake frequently and were a bit surprised.
  • Acronyms are used frequently in computing, and by far the best acronym (and this is completely objective, not based at all on my subjective opinion) is TWAIN: Technology Without An Interesting Name. Perhaps second is INTERCAL: The Compiler Language With No Pronounceable Acronym. In short, we (computer scientists) generally have no idea what we are doing and we do bizarre things for laughs.
